About Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over the damaged or decayed tooth with the purpose of restoring the health, function and appearance of your tooth. Dr. Shah will ensure your crown fits precisely over your tooth and in order to do so will need to remove a tiny portion of the enamel before cementing your new restoration. Dental crowns are made from many kinds of materials, but at Cary Smiles, we work with distinguished labs to produce top-notch crowns made from cutting-edge materials such as zirconia and lithium disilicate.

What To Expect During A Crown Procedure

Experiencing some fear or anxiety about a dental procedure is normal. However, we aim to help you understand the process a little bit better in order to ease any concerns you may have. We are able to place a dental crown for you in just two quick appointments right at our Cary office. For your first appointment, you can expect the following:

  • Preparing the tooth: Dr. Shah and our team will get the tooth ready for your new dental appliance by removing a portion of the enamel. This not only makes room for the crown, but also ensures that it will stay in place.

  • Taking digital impressions: Thanks to modern technology, we are able to take digital impressions of your teeth instead of using previous goopy models. These images are then sent to a lab where your crown is custom made just for you.

  • Placing a temporary crown: Your permanent crown typically takes a few weeks to craft. In the meantime, using our SprintRay 3D printer, we will fit a temporary 3D printed crown on your tooth to protect it.

At your second appointment, Dr. Shah and our team will first take off the temporary crown. He will then evaluate the shape and color to ensure it matches the shade of your natural teeth, as well as make sure it fits exactly as it should. If everything looks good, Dr. Shah will safely and securely bond it to your tooth with dental cement.

3D Printed Crowns

With our SprintRay 3D printer, Cary Smiles proudly provides same-day temporary crowns to ensure our patients always leave with a complete smile after a major dental procedure. This advanced 3D printing technology allows Dr. Shah to craft precise, high-quality temporary crowns right here in our Cary office, making your visit as convenient as possible! This revolutionary approach to dental restoration means you can rest assured your tooth is protected while we wait for your permanent crown to be prepared.

Recovery And Aftercare for your Dental Crowns

It may take a few days for you to get adjusted to your new restoration, but overall it will appear and act just like your natural teeth. Our Cary Smiles team will give you care instructions to make sure you are informed about how to take care of your new crown. These instructions include:

  • Diet restrictions: Avoid chewing ice cubes and hard, crunchy foods like popcorn kernels and caramels. These types of foods can pull off your crown or damage it, causing you to visit us again for another repair.

  • Healthy oral habits: To keep your crown clean, brush your teeth twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush.

  • Routine dental visits: Make sure you visit our office every six months for your regular preventative care. Dental cleanings ensure your teeth, gums and mouth are in optimal health.

  • Protection: If you know that you grind your teeth, consider wearing a custom mouthguard. Wearing a mouthguard, especially at night, protects your teeth from wear and prevents damage to dental crowns.
