About Dental Onlays

Dental onlays are a type of dental restoration designed to fix a damaged tooth. Custom made in a lab, they fit the cusp or the chewing surface of your tooth. In the past, onlays were made with metal or gold materials. The resin ceramic onlays of the present are that are strong, reliable and aesthetically pleasing. They are a great option if Dr. Shah believes a filling cannot effectively repair your cavity or the tooth decay extends behind the top of the tooth.

The Process of Getting A Dental Onlay

If Dr. Shah and our team determine you need a dental onlay, we aim to make the process as easy and convenient as possible. The procedure can be done in just two quick visits, and we are happy to work with your schedule to find a time that works for you.

During your first visit for your dental onlay, we will make sure you are as comfortable as possible and numb the tooth with a local anesthetic to keep you from feeling any discomfort. Once the numbing has taken effect, Dr. Shah will prepare the affected tooth for the onlay and take digital impressions to send to the lab to make your custom, permanent restoration. Before you leave, Dr. Shah will put a temporary 3D printed onlay on to safeguard your tooth until the permanent one arrives. Utilizing advanced technology with our SprintRay 3D printer, we are able to craft your onlay in-house—so that our patients benefit from leaving our office with a restored smile.

After your customized dental onlay has arrived at our office, we will have you come in for your second appointment. At this time, Dr. Shah will remove your temporary one, clean the tooth and secure the permanent onlay ensuring a precise fit. He will then polish the tooth to make sure it is smooth and check your bite.

Tips for Caring For Your Temporary Dental Onlay

It is important that you take extra care before receiving your permanent onlay to prevent any further damage or complications. After you receive your temporary restoration, your mouth may still be numb from the local anesthetic. You should avoid eating anything until you regain sensation in that area to avoid hurting yourself. Here are some additional tips Cary Smiles recommends as you await for your permanent onlay to arrive at our office:

  • Don’t floss near the onlay since this may cause it to become dislodged

  • Avoid eating chewy, crunchy foods as it could damage it

  • Steer clear of overly hot or cold beverages that may irritate the area

  • Make sure to still brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes, but do so gently around the temporary onlay

If your temporary onlay becomes loose or pops out, contact us as soon as possible!
